Elton Etheridge

Obituary & Live Stream Home-going Service

Elton E. Etheridge was born in Southampton, New York to the late John H. Etheridge Sr. and Emma Gaylord Etheridge on June 19, 1937. Elton departed from his earthly body to his heavenly body early Monday, November 2, 2020 at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care. Elton attended the Southampton Public School system in L.I. NY, where he graduated in 1956. He was a four-letter athlete: baseball, basketball, football, and track – excelling in each sport. In his early childhood through adult years, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Southampton, N.Y., later becoming a member of Community Baptist Church of Southampton, N.Y. After serving a short term in the United States Army, he received an honorable discharge. He was united in holy matrimony to Florence Lee on October 19, 1957. Elton began working at the Southampton Golf Club in 1965 under the leadership of one of his best friends, Robert ‘Hook’ Williams. Elton became the ‘Superintendent of Greens’ in 1973 serving in that capacity for 33 years. He retired in 2006 and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Florence of 63 years, spending time with his family, and taking daily walks while meeting up with many friends, in which a short hello would turn into a long and pleasant chat. He was the proud father of three daughters, Wanda, Linda, and Kim and cherished the day when he became a grandfather. He was a man of humility, kindness, and quiet strength who was quick to extend a helping hand to those in need. In an article written in 2006 entitled ‘One of A Kind’, he was asked what his legacy would be, he stated, “I hope my legacy is that I left the impression that a minority could handle his job as well as any other race.” Elton leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Florence C. Lee Etheridge, daughters Wanda (Kevin) Turpin, Linda (Anthony) Gilliam, Kim (Michael) Jarvis, grandchildren Kevin (Tiphané) Turpin II, Jade Turpin, Tanya Gilliam, Tara Gilliam, Kody Jarvis, Kyle Jarvis, and two great grandchildren, Sean and Elle Turpin. One godson William (Octavia) Ward Jr. Three sisters in law, Barbara Lee, Thelma Lee, and Ruth Lee. A host of nieces and nephews (affectionally calling him ‘Uncle Peewee’), cousins, and friends. As the article stated, Elton was truly, One of a Kind! He will be greatly missed by his family & friends! Live Stream of service will appear below:
