Samuel Sawyer, Sr. was born August 9, 1939 in North Carolina to the late Lucian Sawyer and Mignon Sharp Sawyer. The angel of silence came and sealed the lips of Samuel on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
Saw grew up in Southampton and attended the Southampton Public School System.
He loved driving the bus and was very proud to be a bus driver. He always carried his Operator's ID #140 with him and would pull it out to show you with pride. He was always ready to tell stories about driving the bus.
He met and married Betty J. Moore and they were a loving couple until his demise.
For more than twenty years, he worked for the Green Bus Line in Jamaica, New York until his retirement. He was also employed by the Hampton Jitney Bus Company.
Sam loved to sing and was one of the song leaders at the Springfield Garden Church of Christ, Springfield, New York where he was baptized.
He was a loving and giving spirit but yet stern.He would always tell you "like it was!" He was lovingly known to most of his grandchildren as "Poppy."
He was predeceased by his son: Samuel, Jr.; stepsons: Kenny and Dennis; his siblings Annie Walker, Ethel Woolley, Minnie MacAutry, Pauline White, Odessa Wingfiled, Vivian Hamilton, Mary Roach, Lucian Sawyer, Jr., Henry Sawyer, John Mitchell and Walter Mitchell but memories of him will always be cherished by: his wife: Betty K. Sawyer, his children: Cassandra, Cleste, Cassina, Michael, Graig; stepchildren: Alvin, Julia, Jerecua; brothers: Tom Sawyer, Lamar Bell, Kevin Bell, Albert Ray; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
