Obituary of Leona P. Gilliam

Leona Gilliam departed this life on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Hampton Center in Southampton, New York. Leona was born on March 4, 1926 in East Hampton, New York. and was the last living child of five siblings born to the late Paul and Katherine Parker. Leona attended the public schools of Southampton. After graduating from high school, Leona moved to New York City, where she worked for several years. In 1947, Leona was united in holy matrimony to the late Edward Gilliam (Beloved Bootsie), who she had met earlier in childhood at Sunday school. They enjoyed 63 wonderful years together and from this union were born two children, June Carol Gilliam and the late Edward Gilliam, Jr. For many years, Leona and Bootsie lived and raised their children in East Orange, New Jersey. They later moved back to Long Island where they built a home in the town of East Hampton. Enjoying a leisurely paced life in East Hampton, they were surrounded by a large extended family, including their church family at The First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton. Leona was an active member of the church, serving as President of the Senior Missionary Society. Leona is survived by her daughter, June Carol Gilliam; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Gilliam of St. Petersburg, Florida and an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
