He was a resident of Southampton, where he lived with his wife, Lyn Hamer. Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 23, 1920, he was the son of Otto Martin Hamer and Blanche Kalisher Hamer.

Mr. Hamer graduated from Evanston High School and Northwestern University. In 1946 he received an MBA from Harvard Business School. During World War II he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 on the staff of the Commander of LST Group 12, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He and Lyn summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya, and he climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest when he was 79. He was a member of the Meadow Club in Southampton
