Obituary of Mattie Banks

Mattie Louise Banks the daughter of the late Eddie Sutton and Bessie Sutton was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on September 10, 1921. She departed this life at her home in Southampton, New York on Wednesday, August 4, 2011 surrounded by loved ones. Mattie began her formal education in the Elizabeth City School District, but she decided to join the work force at a very young age to help her family. She was the third oldest child of thirteen children. Mattie married the late Garland Banks and they moved to Bridgehampton, New York seeking better job opportunities. Mattie joined the Bridgehampton Church of God in Christ in 1950 where she served the Lord faithfully under the guidance of the late Elder Garland Lee Thomas. Six years later in 1956 Elder Thomas appointed Mattie to the usher board. She was the first appointed usher at the Bridgehampton Church of God in Christ and she served faithfully for many years as President of the Usher Board. She was also a Pastor's Aide Leader for several years under Elder Thomas. Mattie remained a faithful member of the church under the guidance of Pastor Thomas J. Williams who appointed her to the Mother's Board. Mattie loved working in the church in any capacity that she could. Mattie was a very hard working person and she held positions cooking in local restaurants for many years until she gained employment at Southampton Hospital where she worked in the housekeeping dept. She also worked several part time jobs in the domestic field. Mattie was loved by her employers and fellow employees. Mattie loved cooking for her family, neighbors and friends. She held many of the family gatherings and she was known for her sweet potato pies, cornbread and chicken potpie. Her biggest joy was collecting things. She loved a good yard sale. She would often buy and save things for some one who may come by and need it, or just to look at and enjoy for herself. She was a true collector who always new what she had even if she couldn't remember where she put it, which often brought a good laugh to her family and friends. Her husband Garland Banks and her son Hercules Banks predeceased Mattie in death, but she leaves to celebrate her memory her daughter Patricia Williams of Charleston, South Carolina, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grand children; Four sisters, Bessie Rountree of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Grizzell Sutton of Hampton Bays, New York, Ruby Grant of Manchester, Connecticut and Cora Stevens of Southampton, New York.
