Obituary of Janice Marshall

Janice Ione Marshall was born on July 16, 1940 in Southampton, New York to the late
Sewell and Mary C. Smith. She was one of five children born from this union. She was
raised on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
Janice graduated from Southampton High School in 1958. During her high school years,
she excelled in academics and graduated as the Valedictorian. She was very active in
the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church where she served many years as an Elder, Youth
Counselor and Sunday School Teacher.
She married her sweetheart Albert Marshall Sr. in 1959. From this union they had three
children, Catherine Nadine Johnson, Lynne Patricia Marshall and Albert Marshall Jr.
Janice loved children. This was evident even in her choice of employment. As Janice
started her career in Southampton Public Schools first as an aide to "Chip," whom she
loved dearly she was quickly promoted. Her warm presence was the perfect addition as
faculty, students and parents entered the principal's office at the Southampton
Elementary School, where she was employed as the Secretary to the principal through
several administrations. She retired in 1996 and embarked on her second most
cherished adventure caring for her beloved grands and great-grands. She looked to
each new day of spending time with them. No matter what the adventure entailed.
Janice is predeceased by her father, the late Sewell Smith and mother; the late Mary C.
Somers Smith, her brothers Earl David Smith, Norman Franklin Smith and godson
Lorillard Garret Smith Jr., brother-in- laws, Lorillard Smith, Arthur Thomas, Thomas
Williams, James Davis, Jake Kellis, and sister-in- laws Barbara Kitt and Natalie Smith. To
forever cherish her memories she leaves her husband of 58 years, Albert Marshall Sr.,
daughters Catherine Nadine Johnson, Lynne Patricia Marshall, and a son Albert Marshall
Jr. She also leaves her sisters Yvonne Elaine Thomas and Gloria Lucille Smith. Her
adored grandchildren Joseph Johnson IV, Nicole Brittany Johnson, Cameron Nova
Marshall, Gabriel Marshall, Nyree Lynette Marshall, Nova Addison Marshall and Zion
Kendall Marshall. Her great grandchildren, William Isaiah Bess III, Duane Jason Bess,
Jayceon Tre Johnson, sister-in- laws Beatrice Williams, Corrinne Kellis, Elizabeth Davis, a
brother in law James Kitt and her godson, Terrell "Terry" Terry. She will be greatly
missed by a host of friends, family and community.
